THE SOIL
The soil in the Wachau area has been exposed to a great variety of influences throughout the centuries. Geologically this is a soil (Gföhler Gneis) that has developed out of granit. Even the Ice Age contributed decisively to the soil as we know it today.
In the warm periods, massive river currents brought sands that caused the development of the warm, dry soil, on different levels.
The wine produced from the vineyards in the lower areas is lively and has a delicate structure. In contrast to this, the wine from our Steinriegl and Klaus vineyards (Gföhler Gneis) has more of a mineral quality.
